Faculty position call Synthetic Biology

The Institute for Biological and Medical Engineering (IIBM) of the Schools of Engineering, Medicine and Biological Sciences (iibm.uc.cl) and the Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering (DIQB)  of the School of Engineering of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile invite applications for a tenure-track full-time faculty position in synthetic biology. The objective of this call is to enhance the area of synthetic biology in both units and the university. The position will have primary affiliation at IIBM and secondary affiliation at DIQB. The position requires a Ph.D. in bioengineering, biotechnology, synthetic biology, or similar areas. Postdoctoral experience is highly desirable.

Requirements: The applicant should have an outstanding publication track record in the area, with the potential to obtain external research funds and develop high-quality teaching. Applicants should be proactive in pursuing independent research lines, able to work collaboratively and show evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Research areas of interest may include for example the development of biosensors and biosystems with biomedical, food and environmental applications, rational drug design and rapid disease diagnosis, genome engineering with biomedical and industrial applications, the optimized synthesis of various chemical compounds of industrial interest, as well as the engineering of microbial communities and the design and modeling of biological circuits.

The position will be part of an interdisciplinary environment, where he/she will be able to interact with academics in diverse research areas from chemical engineering, industrial, environmental and food biotechnology, to biomedical engineering, genetics and microbiology, among others.

The position will require undergraduate and graduate teaching. For example, the candidate could lead courses closely related to existing courses such as Synthetic Biology and Prototyping, Biological Engineering Design, Fundamentals of Biotechnology, or other bioengineering courses. The candidate is also expected to create and teach graduate courses in his/her area of expertise.

The major of Biological Engineering, within its minor in bioengineering, has a specialization in synthetic biology, which is of great interest to our students. The Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering include Synthetic Biology as one of their priority research areas.

  1. Research statement (in English) indicating immediate and long term goals for your research plan. Detail potential collaboration networks with other researchers and plans for interactions with scientists in Chile and other countries.
  2. Teaching statement (in English) indicating why you should be considered for the position and your plans for teaching. Be as specific as possible, e.g. giving examples of how you aim to transfer your knowledge to undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. Up-to-date curriculum vitae in English – see note B.
  4. Copies of your five most important WoS publications highlighting their contribution to science and engineering. Include a full list of articles you consider relevant in the context of your application.

Once the complete set of application materials has been received, the applicant will be contacted no later than the 30 th of November and informed whether or not his/her application has been accepted for further consideration. If this initial screening is successful, the candidate will be asked to give a lecture on his/her current research topics and hold interviews with the Director of the Institute, the Deans and members of the Selection Committee.
